"My organization's overhead rate is 15%, theirs is 50%, are we losing out?" "Rent is an administrative cost. Why is it listed in your budget as a direct cost?" "We only allow 15% for overhead. Do you still want the grant?" Variations of these questions have been posed to us by staff, funders, Board members and others. Periodically we need to question our methods for calculating an indirect cost rate and indeed wonder if we are maximizing our rates of recovery.

At the suggestion of last year's participants, we have broken the Indirect Cost Workshop into two days. The September 9 workshop will cover the basics of indirect costs and the NICRA (Negotiated Indirect Cost Rate Agreement). Topics will include basic indirect theory, review of various rate types, as well as proposing and managing a NICRA. On September 10 we will discuss more advanced topics such as advanced rate theory and structures, strategies for Full Indirect Recovery in a “cap” environment; and case studies of various donors approach to paying indirect costs.
